Affordable Meals Under $10.00 (Day 3)

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Hi everyone today, I want to share with you about a tactic  I used yesterday that gave me great results.  Because we are focused on affordable meals and beginner cooks  I decided to try and get rid of some boxes of macaroni & cheese dinners.  You know the small boxes that you would buy for the kids when you want to make something quick and easy.  Anyway, I took two of these boxes and followed the directions on it.  I never did like that pouch with the powdered cheese sauce  in it but now, I realize it helps out a lot.  The only thing you need to add is milk and butter.

Scalloped Potatoes by you.

Hi everyone, today’s meal is also easy and affordable.  There are so many meals we can cook on the budget that we have set.  This will be one of your side dishes so all you have to do is, get your meat, vegetable, salad or whatever you have planned .  One of my other favorite dishes is potatoes.  Scalloped, augratin, mashed, fried or boiled you name it and I love it.  So lets do the scalloped potatoes and remember, we are still  putting our attention on the beginner cook.

6 medium potatoes

3 tablespoons butter

chocolate cake by you.

Hi every, today will be real short and quick.  This cake,  I made for my granddaughter Harmony.  She loves ice cream and cake.  I myself,  am not a big sweet eater but little harmony, can get anything out of me.  So I decided to bake a cake for her.  At least, to see if I could do it since it’s not one of my favorite things  to do.   What I did notice,  was that you can get really good deals on cake mixes or on whatever sweet you want to make.   So with the sale going on I was able to pick up ten boxes of cake mix for ten dollars.  What a deal.

salmon patties by you.

This week we will spend time,  cooking meals for under $10.00.   Now I know it can be done  and you will be surprised how many affordable meals that you can make at that price.   So we will get started with today’s pick which is Salmon Patties.   Salmon patties are made from the pink salmon that comes in cans.  Our brand name is Deming’s.  One can of salmon will cost you about $2.50 and I alway’s like to catch them when they are two or three for $5.00.  With one can of salmon you can make about 5-6 patties.  The only ingredients you need, is 1 egg and two or three tablespoon’s of cornmeal, salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste.  The juice that is in the can put to the side in case you need it.

Leamon Pepper Salmon

lemon pepper salmon by you.

This turned out to be one of my favorite recipe’s.   Number one I had not really cooked salmon but I have watch it being cooked over and over again.  When I went to the grocery store, it was such a great deal I couldn’t pass it up.  I knew from talking with my daughter that she would cook her salmon with leamon peppe  so, after much research,  I found this receipe from G. Garvin’s  Turn Up The Heat.   This is one of the meals that only if I think it’s a good deal, will I  purchase it.  Also, the dish tasted better the next day, because all the seasonings had a chance to go through it.  I served the salmon over a bed of seasoned rice.   So check out this receipe and let me know what you think, or maybe you might have a better receipe for doing salmon.

Fried Shrimp with Season French FriesHey there everyone hope all is well.  Today,  I was in the mood for my favorite, which is seafood.  No matter what kind of seafood, I love it.  So today,  I had some left over shrimp and I decided to fry them up.   Most of the time, I don’t like to fry shrimp because the batters  are always to thick.  Last week I was out shopping and picked up some Tempura batter mix by McCormick.  What a fantastic taste.  The shrimps were not thick with batter it was like they just melted in your mouth.  This actually was a very affordable meal.  I always wait till I catch the shrimp on sale because we use them in a lot of dishes at my house.  Also, another good investment are the Season french fries they have a very good taste and are well seasoned.  This is also a meal you might want to fix for  your girl’s night out, or like me when I’m chillin lookin at a good movie I like to snack and eat whatever my taste buds are demanding.  So Try this out and play around with your sauces or whatever you like to dip shrimp in.

Cooking Like Mom

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

This blog is dedicated to my mom because without her, I would not know half the things I do know in the kitchen.  I remember I used to ask her for the same recipes during the holiday’s and she would say, I gave you that recipe last year what did you do with it.  I always wrote them down but, would always loose them and she knew it.  Then one year, I asked her again for the same old recipe’s and she said, you better write them down cause I might not be here next year.

Texas Beef Brisket

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

This post was written on the holiday but, because I was switching to my own domain it looks like I’m very late.  Actually, I just didn’t want to change it because I thought that there would be someone who could relate to what my friend Chevis is talking about.
I spent the 4TH of July with a very good friend of mine Chevis , and on this particular day he was smoking a brisket. We have been friends for such a long time, I’ve watched him cook and create many dishes, so I told him that I wanted to be in on this one because I had never smoked a brisket  before.   He had been in a very different mood that day so I asked him jokingly what had his panties in a bunch. He said “these are thoughts on my mind today that I want to share”.
